A group of old school friends are aiming to complete the upcoming Sark to Jersey and Jersey to Carteret rowing race this July and all whilst raising funds and awareness for the Jersey Child Care Trust.
The ‘All 4 Megan’ crew of Carl Gavey, Dave Carpenter, Joel Speight, Alex Sieroczuk and Stephen Prosser (the cox) chose the Jersey Child Care Trust as we helped and cared for Carl’s daughter, Megan, in her early years. Megan was born with an extremely rare condition called Jacobsen syndrome, which means Megan required support that we provided. Megan is now 7 years old and is a very happy learner at Mont A L’Abbe School.
“They gave Megan a great start in life, so for that we want to raise funds as our way of saying thank you!”
After getting together and brainstorming ideas for hours, the crew decided with some encouragement from Dave (the only member of the group with any rowing experience) that their aim and challenge for themselves was to complete the rowing race on Saturday 1st July. With each race having a duration of 2.5 hours the crew have been training together 3 times a week in their boat ‘Betty’.
“The rowing community have got behind us and helped drive our progression into a half decent crew! It has been great to get together to do something meaningful.”
With a target of raising £5,000, to help the JCCT support more children like Megan, to ensure all children have access to high quality early childcare and education, which is so important to their development and social skills.
